Engineering Limitations & Chemical Fitness Warnings

Extracted directly from Brady Technical Data Sheets to prevent real-world application failures and chemical degradation:

  • UL: "B-483A is a UL Recognized Component to UL969 Labeling and Marking Standard when printed with the Brady Series R6000 Halogen Free and the Brady Series R4900 ribbons. See UL file MH17154 for specific details. UL information can be accessed on-line at UL.com in the UL Product iQ area." The Brady Series R4400 colored ribbons are listed under Recommended Ribbons but are not named in this UL statement.
  • CSA: "B-483A is a CSA Accepted material when printed with the Brady Series R6000 Halogen Free ribbon. See CSA file 041833 for specific details." CSA information can be accessed online at https://www.csagroup.org/testing-certification/product-listing/ . This statement names only the R6000 Halogen Free ribbon - the R4900 ribbon named in the UL statement is not named here.
  • WEEE-RoHS: the sheet does not state a compliance status. It directs the reader to regional websites instead: "For information on the Weee-RoHS compliance status for a Brady Product go to one of the following websites: In Canada: www.bradycanada.ca/weee-rohs / In Europe: www.bradyeurope.com/rohs / In Japan: www.brady.co.jp/products/labelsuse/rohs / All other regions: www.bradyid.com/weee-rohs"
  • Abrasion result is ribbon-specific: the Performance Properties preamble states "Results the same for both ribbons unless noted otherwise," and the Abrasion Resistance result cell is noted otherwise, reading "R6000 Halogen Free: Print legible after 100 cycles." No abrasion result is given for the R4900 ribbon.
  • The second chemical resistance table applies to the ToughStripe overlaminated construction, not to bare B-483A. Its preamble reads: "ToughStripe labels (B-483A colors overlaminated with B-634 clear polyester overlaminate) were tested in the following chemical reagents." The "F = Failed" verdicts in that table therefore belong to the overlaminated construction as tested, and the sheet gives no equivalent 7 day immersion or dip test result for B-483A on its own.
  • Solvent print durability limits (first chemical resistance table): with both the R4900 and the R6000 Halogen Free ribbons, Methyl Ethyl Ketone and Toluene each produced "No visible effect w/o rub, complete print removal after rub." Skydrol 500B-4 produced "Moderate print removal w/o rub, complete print removal with rub" with R4900 and "No visible effect w/o rub, severe print removal after rub" with R6000 Halogen Free.
  • Adhesive limits (first chemical resistance table, "EFFECT TO LABEL STOCK" column): Methyl Ethyl Ketone, Mineral Spirits, Mil 5606 Oil, and Super Agitene each produced "Slight adhesive ooze."
  • Several reagents were not tested against one ribbon. In the "R6000 Halogen Free" column, Speedi Kut Cutting Oil 332, Rust Veto 342, and Northwoods Buzz Saw Citrus Degreaser are each marked "Not Tested."
  • Storage and user responsibility, from the paragraph below the ToughStripe table: "Shelf life is two years from the date of receipt for this product as long as this product is stored in its original packaging in an environment below 80°F (27°C) and 60% RH. It remains the responsibility of the user to assess the risk of using this product. We encourage customers to develop testing protocols that will qualify a product's fitness for use in their actual application."
  • Document-wide note, printed after the trademarks list with no row or section label: "Note: All values shown are averages and should not be used for specification purposes."
  • Document-wide disclaimer, printed after that note: "Test data and test results contained in this document are for general information only and shall not be relied upon by Brady customers for designs and specifications, or be relied on as meeting specified performance criteria. Customers desiring to develop specifications or performance criteria for specific product applications should contact Brady for further information."
  • Compliance data disclaimer: "Product compliance information is based upon information provided by suppliers of the raw materials used by Brady to manufacture this product or based on results of testing using recognized analytical methods performed by a third party, independent laboratory. As such, Brady makes no independent representations or warranties, express or implied, and assumes no liability in connection with the use of this information."
  • Unit derivation note: "All S.I. Units (metric) are mathematically derived from the U.S. Conventional Units"

Chemical & Solvent Resistance Matrix

Standardized dip and rub immersion test observations across industrial fuels, oils, solvents, and cleaners.

"Samples printed with the Brady Series R6000 Halogen Free and the Brady Series R4900 ribbons. Testing was conducted after 24 hour dwell. Testing consisted of 5 cycles of 10 minute immersions in the specified chemical reagent followed by 30 minute recovery periods. After final immersion, samples rubbed 10 times with cotton swab saturated with test fluid."
