Photoluminescent Egress Marking: The Layer That Works With the Power Off

Every other life-safety system in the building needs energy exactly when energy is least reliable. Photoluminescent marking inverts that: it banks ambient light all day and spends it during the blackout, with no wiring and no battery schedule. The engineering questions are charge access, placement geometry, and honest expectations about decay — all three below, plus where codes stop suggesting and start requiring.

1. Charge, Decay, and the Two Rules They Impose

Modern photoluminescent films use strontium aluminate pigments: hours of ambient charging yield emission that is brightest in the critical first minutes of darkness — when the crowd is actually on the stairs — then tapers over the following hours. Two design rules fall straight out of that curve:

Rule 1 — The marking must see light to give light

Codes tie luminous markings to spaces where normal lighting charges them. Survey the actual lux at the installed position — behind a door swing or under a stair overhang, a glow strip may live in shadow and store nothing.

Rule 2 — Mark where dark-adapted eyes will look

In darkness people navigate by feet and hands, not signage height: tread noses, handrails, and floor-level perimeter lines outperform anything mounted at eye level. That is why the code package is stripes and outlines, not glowing posters.
