1. The 4 Mandatory UL 508A Panel Labeling Categories

Category 1

Main Electrical Nameplate & SCCR

Must display supply voltage, phase, frequency, full load current (FLA), largest motor load, enclosure NEMA/IP rating, and Short Circuit Current Rating (SCCR in kA).

Recommended: Brady B-483A / B-593 (UL 969 Recognized)
Category 2

Arc Flash & High Voltage Warnings

Under NFPA 70E and UL 508A Section 52, panels operating above 50V must display ANSI Z535 DANGER / CAUTION safety decals near main disconnect handles and exterior doors.

Recommended: Brady B-595 All-Weather High-Tack Vinyl
Category 3

Internal Wire & Conductor Tags

Every single conductor must be labeled at both termination points (source and destination) matching schematic circuit numbers. Must not slip or flag over time.

Recommended: Brady B-427 (Self-Lam) / B-342 (3:1 Sleeve)
Category 4

Protective Earth (PE) & Grounding

Main bonding jumpers, sub-panel grounding studs, and incoming ground bus bars must be clearly marked with green/yellow PE symbols (IEC 60417-5019).

Recommended: Brady B-595 Green/Yellow Ground Decals

2. The #1 Reason Panels Fail Inspection: Unrated Adhesives on Powder Coat

Most industrial control cabinets are painted with low-surface-energy (LSE) textured polyester powder coatings (surface energy ≤ 28 dynes/cm). Standard commercial labels peel off within weeks. UL 508A inspectors require labels to be UL 969 recognized specifically for powder-coated steel.

Inspector Rule: Avoid Standard Phenolic Engraving Plate Failure

Riveting phenolic plates can breach the enclosure NEMA 4/12 environmental seal. Specifying Brady B-593 Raised Panel foam-backed plates provides a drop-in 0.025" thick thermal printable plate with 130 oz/in acrylic tack, fully preserving enclosure ingress ratings.
