Wire Numbering Schemes: Pick One Philosophy and Never Mix Them
Every wire marker answers a future technician's question — the schemes differ only in which question. Page-line numbers answer "where is this on the print?"; source-destination answers "where does this go?"; sequential answers nothing without its list. All three work. What never works is mixing them in one enclosure, or the deadlier version: numbers on copper that drifted from numbers on drawings.

- One conductor, one number, both terminations — the NFPA 79 baseline from the machine wiring guide.
- The schematic assigns numbers; humans never invent one at the bench. A field-invented number is a future mystery wire.
- Print from the wire list, never from memory: export via the AutoCAD Electrical tool or EPLAN converter and feed the printer directly.
- Marker technology follows the build: B-342 sleeves for pre-termination OEM work, B-427 self-lam for landed and retrofit wires — sized per the AWG chart.
- As-built discipline: when a wire is added or moved at commissioning, the print changes the same day the marker does. The drift between copper and drawings is the real enemy, not the scheme choice.
Do not renumber incrementally — half-migrated schemes are worse than either endpoint. Ring out and document to a temporary source-destination map first, then renumber wholesale to your standard scheme in one planned outage, printing the full marker set in advance.
