NFPA 704 vs. GHS: Two Systems, Opposite Number Scales

The fire diamond on the building and the pictogram label on the bottle are frequently treated as competing versions of the same idea. They are not — different readers, different placement, different law, and a numbering inversion that catches somebody in every training class: NFPA's 4 is the worst; GHS's Category 1 is the worst. Here is the clean split.

Train the inversion explicitly

Acetone: NFPA flammability 3, GHS Flammable Liquid Category 2. Diethyl ether: NFPA 4, GHS Category 1. Same substances, opposite numeric intuition. Put a side-by-side example like this in every HazCom refresher — it is the single highest-value slide in the deck.

2. Placement Map for a Typical Facility

  • Building exterior entrances & chemical storage rooms: NFPA 704 diamond, sized to AHJ requirements (15" is the common exterior spec), rated for the worst material inside — on UV-stable B-595 vinyl or reflective stock for night response.
  • Fixed tanks & bulk vessels: NFPA 704 plus contents identification; outdoor exposure makes this an outdoor durability problem first.
  • Every chemical container, original or secondary: GHS system — six elements on shipped containers, the workplace options covered in the GHS secondary container guide.
  • Gas cylinder cages, waste accumulation areas: Both systems commonly meet here: 704 on the enclosure, GHS on each container inside.
  • Safety cabinets (flammables, corrosives): Cabinet signage per fire code, GHS on the bottles within — the cabinet sign is not a substitute for container labels.

Both systems share one production reality: multi-color printing. An i5300-class sign printer produces the four-color diamond and red-frame GHS pictograms in-house on B-595 or B-7569 stock — one machine, both compliance systems.
