Heat-Shrink Ratio Explained: What 2:1 vs. 3:1 Actually Buys You
The ratio on a heat-shrink spec is a working window, not a marketing number: it defines the largest thing the sleeve slides over and the smallest wire it still grips. Get the window wrong and the sleeve either never clears the connector or never stops spinning on the wire. Two minutes of recovery math prevents both.
1. Recovery Math by Supplied Size
Recovered diameter = supplied ÷ ratio. The two rules that use this table: supplied Ø clears the largest pass-over (connector included), recovered Ø is smaller than the insulation OD so the sleeve grips:

Worked example: marking 16 AWG leads (≈ 0.08" insulation OD) already fitted with 0.25" ring terminals. A 1/8" sleeve grips the wire but never clears the terminal; a 3/8" 2:1 clears the terminal but recovers to 0.187" — loose. The 3/8" 3:1 clears the terminal and recovers to 0.125", snug on the wire. That asymmetry is the entire case for 3:1 in terminated work.
