Every Industrial Color Code on One Page
Six independent color languages operate simultaneously in a typical plant, and none of them agree with each other. That is not a flaw to fix — each is scoped to its own object class, and the real code is always color + what it is on. This page is the cross-reference: each system's logic in one line, the same-color-six-meanings demonstration, and the link to each system's full guide.
1. The Six Systems and Their Logic
| System | Colors Live On | What Color Encodes | Deep Guide |
|---|---|---|---|
| ANSI Z535 safety colors | Signs, labels, tags | Severity: red DANGER → orange WARNING → yellow CAUTION → blue NOTICE → green SAFETY | Z535 guide → |
| ASME A13.1 pipe marking | Pipe contents | Hazard class of the fluid: yellow/black flammable, green/white water, blue/white air, red/white fire quench, orange/black toxic-corrosive | A13.1 guide → |
| Conductor identification | Wire insulation & markers | Reserved: white/gray neutral, green ground, orange high-leg. Convention: BLK-RED-BLU (208V), BRN-ORG-YEL (480V); NFPA 79 machine scheme on top | Voltage marking guide → |
| 5S floor marking | Floor zones | Function of the space: yellow aisles, red red-tag, green goods, blue WIP, black/yellow hazards | 5S guide → |
| TIA-606 administration | Network terminations | Circuit function: orange demarc, blue horizontal, purple common equipment, white/gray backbone tiers | TIA-606-C guide → |
| Hazard rating systems | Chemical containers & buildings | NFPA 704 quadrants (blue health, red flammability, yellow instability) and the GHS red diamond frame — with inverted number scales between them | 704 vs GHS guide → |
2. Exhibit A: Six Meanings of Yellow
The slide to put in every orientation deck — one color, walked across one facility:
Never invent a seventh system. When a local need appears ("let's make purple mean quality hold"), extend an existing system's conventions and document it in the facility color standard — one controlled page, posted where each system lives, printed on stock that survives the wall it hangs on. Undocumented color meanings die with the supervisor who invented them.
Print the color systems in-house
A multi-color sign printer produces certified Z535 headers, pipe marker fields, and posted color legends from one machine — the i5300 class covers all six systems.
